The focus has been on offering a non-intrusive method of taking someone's temperature. "Our thermometers take temperatures with a gentle scan across the forehead," Pompei says. These thermometers have been accepted in thousands of hospitals and are also available on the consumer market. Exergen manufactures the thermometer in Watertown, MA and is, in fact, the only maker of thermometers in the US. When a large order comes in, say, from Wal-Mart, the management style of Exergen is up to the challenge. "We are like a basketball team," says Pompei. "Each person is trained to take on different tasks as required. If needed, I step in as a third shift supervisor." The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce salutes Exergen Corporation for its innovative technologies, commitment to manufacturing its products in Massachusetts, and generous donations of free thermometers. Every year the company gives $100,000 worth of thermometers to clinics that serve children.
