Boston Marathon for the 15th Year |
|
| Boston, MA - April 21, 2003 - Exergen Corporation announces its fifteenth straight year of a continuing thermometry and thermoregulation research program with the Medical Team of the Boston Marathon, the world's oldest and most prestigious race of its kind. The Boston Marathon Medical Team, also the world's oldest and most prestigious organized medical support team for any marathon, has a long tradition of being a research arena for investigating the effects of severe physical stress on athletes and methods of treatment of related injuries. Long considered the standard for medical treatment of marathon athletes, the expertise of the Boston Marathon Medical Team is relied upon by marathon organizers worldwide, including for the Olympic Games. |
The Medical Team was organized in 1978, and consists of more than 400 physicians, nurses, podiatrists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other non-medical personnel, prepared to care for about 15,000 official runners, and nearly 10,000 bandits (non-official runners). At the finish line, the 15,000 square foot medical tent is stocked with more than 500 cots arranged side-by-side, head-to-toe. Supplies include miles of IV tubing and tape, thousands of gallons of IV fluids, antiseptic solution, water, and juices, and thousands of blankets, syringes, needles, alcohol wipes, gloves, adhesive strips, splints, elastic bandages, bags of ice, and energy bars. The objective of the Medical Team is not only to improve care at the finish line, but also to identify ways to prevent injuries.
It has been Exergen's privilege to contribute its thermometry experience towards developing new understanding of human thermoregulation, and improved treatments not only for athletes, but for clinical patients and consumers as well. Its program with the Boston Marathon Medical Team is part of Exergen's continuing program of investigation of temperature and thermoregulation, which has led to the development of the finest clinical and home infrared thermometry systems in the world. |
